Welcome and Announcements

+Silent Prayer
O Eternal, Almighty, and most gracious God! heaven is Your throne, and earth is Your footstool; holy is Your name; You are praised by the heavenly hosts, and in the congregation of Your saints on earth; and will be sanctified in all that come near unto You. We are sinful and unworthy dust; but being invited by You, are bold, through Jesus Christ our Mediator, to present ourselves and our prayers before You. Receive us graciously, help us by Your Spirit; let Your fear be upon us; put Your laws into our hearts, and write them in our minds; let Your word come unto us in power, and be received in love, with attentive, reverent, and obedient minds. Make it to us the savor of life unto life. Cause us to be fervent in prayer, and joyful in Your praises, and to serve You this day without distraction: that we may find that a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. Amen.

Call to Worship

*Hymn of Praise to God
“The Church’s One Foundation” No. 347

+Confession of Sin
+Silent Prayer
We, O Lord, have been a stiff-necked people who love unfaithfulness.  We have loved other gods before you and become their servants.  We have not worshipped you in spirit and in truth and so we have mocked your glory in heaven.  We have used your name in vain and profaned your reputation on earth.  We have desecrated your Sabbath because we have not trusted you to give us rest.  We have not honored our fathers and mothers and so we have proved ourselves rebels.  We have hated our neighbors and murdered them in our hearts.  We have made adulterers of ourselves in the lust of our eyes or in the deeds of our flesh.  We have stolen honor and wealth and privileges that are not ours.  We have lied and falsely accused for we love gossip more than truth.  We have coveted blessings you wisely and righteously gave to others.  O Lord, have mercy on us for we have not kept your law.  In Jesus Name, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

*Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ
“Christ, of All My Hopes the Ground” No. 518

*Confession of Faith
Q.  We have been delivered from our misery by God’s grace alone through Christ and not because we have earned it: why then must we still do good?
A.  To be sure, Christ has redeemed us by his blood. But we do good because Christ by his Spirit is also renewing us to be like himself, so that in all our living we may show that we are thankful to God for all he has done for us, and so that he may be praised through us.  And we do good so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ. The Heidelberg Catechism No. 86.

Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings
Le Cygne                                                                                Camille Saint-Saens

All things are Thine: no gift have we, Lord of all gifts, to offer Thee,
And hence with grateful hearts today, Thine own before Thy feet we lay. Amen.

*Congregational Petitions and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper
The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first.  As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward.  However, individuals may commune at anytime during the distribution of the elements.  Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray.  If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon.

You are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers.  If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord’s Supper.

O Heavenly Father, teach me to see that if Christ has pacified you and satisfied divine justice he can also deliver me from my sins; that Christ does not desire me, now justified, to live in self-confidence in my own strength, but gives me the law of the Spirit of life to enable me to obey you; that the Spirit and his power are mine by resting on Christ’s death; that the Spirit of Life within answers to the law without; that if I sin not I should thank you for it; that if I sin I should be humbled daily under it; that I should mourn for sin more than other men do, for when I see I shall die because of sin, that makes me mourn; when I see how sin strikes at you, that makes me mourn; when I see that sin caused Christ’s death, that makes me mourn; that sanctification is the evidence of reconciliation, proving that faith has truly apprehended Christ; You have taught me that faith is nothing else than receiving your kindness; that it is an adherence to Christ, a resting on him, love clinging to him as a branch to the tree.

+Silent Prayer
O God, the Protector of all that trust in You, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us Your mercy; that, You being our Ruler and Guide, we may so pass through things temporal that we finally lose not the things eternal.  Grant this, O Heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Month of August 2008 in Adult Sunday School:

  • The Foundations of the Faith Class (Room 304) This class is on break at this time. Watch this space for future announcements.
  • The Women of Faith Class (WIC Room) continues "A Year With Corrie ten Boom" and the discussion is led by Mrs. Dawn Darby.  The third book is The Five Silent Years of Corrie ten Boom by Pamela Rosewell.  If you have a copy of the book, please bring it with you.
  • The Contending for the Faith Class (North Side of Fellowship Hall) MEN: You Are Being Called to a Deeper Relationship With Your King!  Respond to that call with a commitment to pursue Holiness in community by attending the men’s Sunday School Class on Proverbs. If you were unable to attend the recent popular men’s class, you have another opportunity. During the months of July and August, a men’s class will meet for a practical study of Proverbs. The class will follow the same format of lecture and small-group discussion we employed in the Disciplines of a Godly Man series. There will also be a web site and blog (online discussion) so you can stay in conversation with your brothers during the week. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and diligently search the Scripture to find out what it says on topics such as relationships, speech, emotions, work, and wealth.
  • The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) Elder Doug Bond begins a new series exploring the life of John Calvin, as we begin to prepare for the 500th anniversary of his birth in 2009.

Meals on Wheels
The following women are “next up” for meals: Noel Sukhia, Jennifer Sullivan, Tami Sullivan, Wendy Tamminga, Amy Vitzthum and Ann Webb.  Please prepare a meal for your freezer, and when a need arises, we'll call you with the details. Any questions, please contact Louise Allen. Thanks!

Parents – Please Note
If you are dropping children off for the nursery and the scheduled adult (over 21 yrs) is not in the room, please do not leave your children until she shows up or a replacement is found. If a replacement is not found, we will not be offering a nursery for that service.

Narthex Art Project Update
Images and progress of work can be seen on Dale Woodard’s web site www.narthexart.com. Samson is finished and is on display. Please do not touch the finished carving. The Rahab model has been removed and will be the next one to be carved. All are welcome to come watch Dale carve; just call first. As the project moves forward and funding more urgent, we would greatly appreciate gifts to underwrite this effort.  The total cost of the project is $82,411 of which we have received $60,805 from church funding & designated giving.

Hearing Assistance
If you would like a device to help with hearing the worship service, please see a Deacon in the narthex.

Explanation of the Cover Symbol
In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek “Jesus”, XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, “Christ”; NIKA means “He conquers”. The symbol then reads “Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross” or “Jesus Christ Victor”.
